BW ABC & %DB – Weight
of calf around 5-6% of cow weight at Birth – BeRealistic,
Calf weight to Cow weight,we use 5-7%. Make
sure you weigh them, guess work never here! We
range from 60 lbs. to 138 lbs. on our calves…A
GREATER RANGE THAN THE YEARLING WEIGHTS ON THE HIEFER
GROUP !! ….WHAT AFFECTS IT??? it is more the
Cow & Recip cow, FEED & MANAGEMENT than Genetics
Sometimes…..so be careful !!!!!! You will be
amazed if you really weigh each calf, the first question
we ask our commercial customers is: “ Do you
weigh your calves? “. so we ask “Do you?? ””, The
Bar 5 calving book is on display and we will hand out
photo copies on Sale Day !! (new policy ) ABC
(%ab) of around 50%, ABC %wb of 70%& Actual
BW of 6% of dam weight.
-
Performance =%DW – Weight
of calf at weaning to Dam, aim for 50% on bulls, & know
the average in your program, ABC’s %wb
Fleckvieh EPD percentile for WG & YG of
over 50% & Actual Weaning Index-- Aim
for Index over 100. Yearling weights – Keep
it 1300 + at one year, or a level for your desired
carcass size, and keep your eye on that Density. Over
1300# YW.
-
Density – aim for 200+ on AYW/FS; 220
or 100 kgs. for Actual. Adjusted Formula -- AYW/Frame
= 200 “Actual” Formula, Actual Weight/Height
X 100 ; needs to be 220 or 100 kgs.
-
Carcass Traits -- REA per 100 lbs. – REA/CWT
over 1. Then take a peak at BF ( 3-6mm ) & Marbling
(2 -4.5% ). Balanced Carcass Values; moderate
rib eye - 50% ABC EPD, & high marbling
+50%ABC in the 3 or more range, & seek
actual BF of 5-6 mm or ABC of 25% – 74%.
If
you set your Production Targets at these Goals, with well
bred cattle that have some eye appeal, you will be well
on your way to success. Great success!! Balance your decision
making with Pedigree, Visual & EPD info, and rely on
your gut, Cowboys!
